What I Wish I Knew Before Starting Yoga

When I started practicing yoga it quickly became one of my favorite activities. I love how it makes me feel—strong, yet calm, focused, and relaxed all at the same time.

If you're thinking about starting yoga, or are just starting out, there are a few things I wish I had known from the very beginning.

1. There's no need to buy new yoga clothes (at least not right away). Chances are, you have everything you need in your closet already. leggings or shorts that you feel comfortable moving in, and a shirt that won't slip up over your head when you're upside down-ish. You don't need anything fancy or branded—just something that you can move freely in.

2. Start with a beginner class. I made the mistake of diving into an intermediate class when I first started practicing yoga, and let me tell you, it was not fun. The classes move too fast and the poses are much more difficult than they look. Stick to beginner classes until you get the hang of things, then slowly work your way up.

3. Don't be afraid to ask questions (or take breaks). Yoga instructors are there to help you, so if you're ever unsure about anything, just ask! And if a pose is too difficult or starts to hurt, take a break or modify the position so that it's more comfortable for you. There's no shame in taking it easy—after all, yoga is supposed to be relaxing!

Yoga is an amazing way to exercise both your body and your mind. It's perfect for people of all ages and levels of fitness, and best of all, it's something you can do from the comfort of your own home.

So what are you waiting for? Roll out your mat and give yoga a try!
