Meditation has been shown to have a multitude of benefits to those who practice it. Being outside has also proven to have multiple benefits. When both of those points are taken into account, it becomes apparent that you may be able to kill two birds with one stone by meditating outside. What better place to do that than in your own backyard?

Choosing Your Meditation Location

Meditation is easier if you have a comfortable location and if you're consistent about where you practice. There are multiple options for spots that could be great meditation places. You could choose a patch of lawn or under a gazebo or pergola. Ideally, the place you choose should be comfortable enough to minimize distractions. If you want, you could add a deck with a dedicated meditation spot. There are lots of ways to customize a deck so that it's exactly the way you want it to be. You can even add a cover so you’ll be more sheltered from the elements during your meditation.

Surrounding Sounds

The sounds around you can make it easier or more challenging to meditate. For example, the sound of running water or wind rustling through trees can be relaxing. You could add a running water feature to your yard and plant trees and shrubs that will allow you to enjoy the sound of the wind and water. If you enjoy the sound of birds, you can find ways to attract them to your yard. Surround yourself with sounds you find relaxing and enjoyable that will help you with your meditation.

Create Privacy

Meditation often works best when it can be practiced undisturbed. It’s easier to focus inward when you minimize outward distractions. To that end, take steps to preserve the privacy of your backyard. Add a fence if you don’t have one. Even setting up screens around your meditation spot can help you separate yourself from the rest of your surroundings. If fences aren’t your thing, you can opt for a natural barrier by cultivating tall hedges. There are some great options for privacy hedges. You’ll just need to maintain them.

Your backyard can be the perfect place to meditate. Choose the perfect meditation location, or locations, in your backyard for your practice. While you won’t be able to control every sound you hear, you can create an environment that supports sounds you find to be soothing. You may find it helpful to create some privacy in your backyard to reduce the risk of being disturbed. This will help you take advantage of the benefits that both spending time outside and meditation have to offer.
