How to Feel More Comfortable While Doing Yoga

Depending on what level you are at, yoga can be a bit of a challenge. Even most advanced participants won’t usually claim that they are experts. If you’re new to practicing yoga, take heart; there’s a reason it’s referred to as “practicing.” That being said, there are a few things you can do and focus on to make your transition a bit smoother. Here are a few tips for how to feel more comfortable when practicing yoga.

Set the Right Mood

Yoga is somewhat different from some other more traditional forms of exercise, as it attempts to involve both the mind and the body. In fact, if you’re brand-new to yoga, Wellwood Health says it might help to familiarize yourself with some yoga terminology because you won’t hear the usual instructions for push-ups, lunges, etc. You can also try practicing during a quiet time of day to the tune of some peaceful music. Nothing loud and jarring, of course! You’ll likely do your best yoga when the music is a background track for your quieted thoughts, not the focus of your exercise sessions.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Many people overlook or underestimate the relationship between comfortable clothing and exercise. Unlike cardio and weightlifting attire, you’ll typically want to wear more fitting clothes during yoga as the positions will require you to be at unusual angles. You’ll be a lot more focused on your posture if you’re not so concerned about your belly showing from your inverted shirt! Getting the right clothes doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go out and spend a fortune on new yoga pants, of course. According to Jo + Jax, dancewear can also be used during activities like yoga and pilates.

Take A Class

Practicing yoga at home isn’t a bad way to go, but especially for those just beginning, working with others may be a better move. One of the best ways to get better at any exercise is to work with a personal trainer or take a class. Yoga is no exception. Working in a group setting enables you to interact with your instructor and classmates and see that you’re doing the positions correctly. And it’s also just fun—you’ll likely enjoy yourself and make some friends in the process! We also offer online classes here at Emerald Yoga!

Beginning yoga can be intimidating, but everyone, no matter what level they’re at, can get something out of doing it. If you’re still feeling apprehensive, try getting some special yoga wear for your yoga sessions. So go start your practice and have fun doing it!
