How to Avoid Feeling Exhausted After Workouts

After a workout, it's natural to feel tired. Your energy has been depleted, and your muscles feel fatigued. But if you're feeling excessively exhausted after your workout, you should figure out what's wrong and address the problem.

Take Breaks

One reason for the exhaustion could be that you're overtraining your body. Exercising for several hours every day puts undue stress on your muscles. You need to give your muscles time to recover and rebuild. It's a good idea to skip a day in your workout to let your body rest. Or, instead of your usual routine, do something different once or twice a week, such as bicycling, swimming, or yoga.

Many people also alternate the focus of their workout by concentrating on legs one day, arms the next, and so on. You can also take small breaks during your workout. A break between sets allows you to assess how you feel and whether any adjustments need to be made, such as how much weight you are lifting.

Stay Hydrated

You've heard it before—you have to stay hydrated when working out. But ask yourself exactly how and when you're replenishing your liquids. It can be too late to wait until after your workout to replace lost fluids. Keep a water bottle nearby and take frequent sips throughout your workout.

Also avoid sports drinks or soda, despite the convenience. Water is a clean way to rehydrate. Drinking water can help prevent you from drinking sugary sodas. If you stay hydrated with water, you won't feel cravings for other drinks.

Eat Right

Food provides you with the food needed to sustain your workout, but if you're not eating the right kinds of food, it can work against you. Loading up on sugary carbs and caffeine may give you an initial rush, but you're likely to crash hard after you're finished exercising.

Instead, before your workout, eat carbs that digest more slowly, such as whole grains and fresh fruit. These foods keep your blood sugar steady. Afterward, focus on lean proteins and nutrient-rich carbs, such as chocolate milk, eggs, or a smoothie with protein powder, to rebuild your muscles.

Complete exhaustion after a workout isn't typical. Rather, it's a sign that you need to make some changes in your pre- and post-workout habits. If you are feeling excessively fatigued after your workout, you may need to alter your workout routine to find what works for you.
