Gym Equipment You Need in Your Home

Engaging in regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy and fit. Hitting a public gym every day isn’t practical for everyone though. Some do better in the convenience and privacy of a home gym.

If you’re setting up a home gym, some pieces of equipment are especially beneficial.

Weights

Weights are an excellent inclusion in any home gym. They make it easy to engage in muscle-strengthening exercises regularly. You can go all out and get a weight machine or keep things simple with quality resistance bands, barbells, dumbbells, and Bosu balls.

Whatever route you choose to go, choose equipment that is appropriate for where you’re at now. You should be able to use them to push yourself and improve your muscular strength and endurance. Weights that are too heavy or too light won’t be nearly as helpful.

A Pool

Okay, so a pool might not seem like an obvious piece of gym equipment, but pools provide an almost unsurpassed opportunity for fitness. Swimming works your cardiovascular system while the water provides gentle resistance that allows you to exercise virtually every muscle in your body.

You don’t even have to have a full-size pool to get the benefits of swimming. Spa pools use less space but allow you to swim against a current. You’ll get similar benefits without giving up as much real estate.

Yoga Mat and Blocks

At first glance, a yoga mat and yoga blocks may only seem useful if you’re into yoga. That’s not the only thing you can use them for though. A yoga mat provides a comfortable surface that you can use as a barrier between your body and the floor. It’s helpful for yoga, pilates, barre exercises, and more. You can even use it while you stretch, something you should do before and after your workouts. Incidentally, that’s also where yoga blocks come in. Yoga blocks shorten the distance between your hands and the floor. That makes it possible to modify stretches to get the benefits of those stretches without compromising your form.

The general guidelines for physical activity are the same for everyone. Adults should strive for a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular physical activity and 2 days of muscle-strengthening activities every week. How you choose to meet those goals will depend on your interests. As such, what type of gym equipment you need may differ from what someone else needs. Still, most people will benefit from having common basic gym equipment.
