Exercises That Go Easy on Your Joints

If you have joint pain, either from a previous injury or arthritis, you may feel discouraged about exercising. Many exercises put strain on the joints, especially large joints like knees, hips, and shoulders. In that case, you need to find low-impact exercises that will give your body a workout but also go easy on your joints.

Yoga

Yoga uses gentle muscle stretches, and the poses are done from a standing, lying, or sitting position. You can do as much as you feel comfortable doing, and you'll still benefit from the exercise. Many poses can be adapted to your skill level.

As you progress, you may notice that your joints are feeling some improvement. Yoga increases flexibility and strengthens your muscles, which puts less stress on your joints. It also improves circulation and boosts your immune system.

Swimming

Swimming is often recommended for people with joint problems. The water supports your weight and takes the strain off of your joints. Swimming laps can also help you lose weight, which will take additional pressure off the knees and hips.

Swimming is less strenuous, making it a great exercise for seniors. If lap swimming is difficult at first, you can try walking from side to side in the pool. Water aerobics is also an option. You can get a good cardio workout without experiencing pain.

Walking

Walking can be beneficial for everyone, no matter what their fitness level or physical limitations are. Although you are putting weight on your hip and knee joints, it is low impact, and you are in total control of how fast and how far you choose to walk. Walk slowly at first and then build up as you feel your joints begin to loosen.

Some people find it difficult to deal with hills and uneven terrain outdoors. If that's the case, you can get the same benefits by using a treadmill. You can adjust the speed and incline of a treadmill for your individual needs. The handholds on each side may also be helpful if you experience a twinge or need help with balance.

You don't have to give up exercise because of pain in your joints. In fact, exercising regularly can help ease the pain in the long run by making your muscles stronger and more flexible. Experiment with low-impact exercises and see which one works the best for you.
