Join us at Emerald for this transformative practice, done in silence. It will be a moving meditation. All levels of yogis are strongly encouraged! You are welcome to go at your own pace.
At Emerald Yoga Studio, it’s no sleepy, boring holiday yoga events for us! Emerald finishes 2021 strong with a moving meditation challenge (and we give proceeds to our Yoga Reaches Out team supporting Boston Children's Hospital!).
“What exactly happens at this event?” We do 108 basic sun salutations in nine sets of 12, with an extended child's pose between sets. The practice is done with music but no speaking. Students are encouraged but not required to take turns leading a set of salutations. We count for you so you don't have to. A bell will signify the beginning and end of each set.
“What's a sun salutation again?” Mountain pose. Sweep arms up, swan dive down to forward fold. Halfway lift, forward fold. High plank, low plank (or knees-chest-chin). Upward-facing dog, downward-facing dog. Step or hop to forward fold. Halfway lift, forward fold. Sweep arms up to standing, mountain pose. This completes one sun salutation.
“Can I DO 108 sun salutations? Isn't that insane?” It's challenging but it's a practice I recommend that EVERYONE try. You don't have to do every one. You can do every other set. You can just do as many as you can until you're done and do child's pose or legs up the wall for the rest of the time. This is your OWN mini yoga marathon, done YOUR way, so it’s for newbies and experienced yogis alike! (And the FEELING when you’re done! An amazing sense of accomplishment, a glorious kind of sore.)
“How long does this take? Like 6 and a half hours?” No! Don't freak out! It takes 75-90 minutes, the length of a regular class.
“What's the point of doing this, really?” It's fun to challenge yourself. It's a nod to the tradition of yoga. And ... when you practice in silence surrounded by others doing the same, it becomes a beautiful moving meditation fueled by the collective generous energy of the room.
