Studio Etiquette

Get ready to have more fun than you ever imagined!

If you are new to Emerald Yoga (and/or new to yoga!), here are some tips to maximize your yoga experience … and make everything more fun for all!

IMG_1094 (2)* Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that are not too loose so the instructor can see what your body is doing.

* Bring a yoga mat and water. Please use a sticky mat that is designed for yoga and not a soft squooshy exercise floor mat, because the latter doesn’t grip the ground and your mat can slip on the floor, or your feet can slip on the mat. We do have mats you can borrow free of charge; please wipe them down when class is over. We will have other props for you as needed. We also have bottled water for $1. Jewel members get free bottled water, because membership has its perks, after all!

* You smell beautiful! But your fellow yogis could be allergic, so please avoid wearing strong scents such as perfumes, essential oils, or cologne.

* If it is your first time at Emerald, please arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out a waiver, get changed if needed, settle in, and perhaps meet and chat with a new friend.

* It is best to let meals or snacks digest before coming to class. After a meal, try to give yourself 2 hours before
practicing yoga. After a snack, try to give yourself 1 hour. You may drink water during class as needed, but you may feel more
comfortable if you hydrate prior to class.

* Help keep our Emerald sparkling! Before you walk into the practice space, take off your shoes in the foyer and place them on the floor (away from the door) or, better yet, in the cubby holes. Practice is barefoot, so please do not wear socks during class; they will make your feet slip on the mat and/or the floor during practice.

* Please make sure you check in at the desk. We don’t want to miss that you came in, and we always want to say hi!

* Please turn your cell phone off, or if you must keep an eye on it for specific reasons, put it on vibrate. If you’ve brought your cell phone in with you and it accidentally rings aloud during class, please turn it off right away. If you need to take a call, please take it outside.

* If you have any injuries, limitations, or concerns, please chat with your instructor before class begins so they can
help you stay safe.

* There are blue tape marks on the floor of the studio. When choosing a spot on the floor, please take your mat and slide the top two corners of your mat into two blue marks. The studio can fit a lot of students! The spots have been measured out and staggered to give everyone plenty of space! Using these designated spots also helps to accommodate any students who might be arriving late, so they can slip into class without other students having to interrupt their own class to stand up and move.

* Your yoga mat is your safe, sacred, happy space! Please respect others’ happy places by not stepping on others’ mats if you need to move around the room.

IMG_0707 (2)* Take child’s pose at any time! If at any point you feel that you need a rest, you feel overwhelmed, or you just don’t feel like doing what the class is doing, then take child’s pose — or just sit up and sip some water and take the chance to re-focus. Re-join the class when you are ready!

* Ask a question if you need to! Let your teacher know if you are confused, are having trouble with something, or are experiencing any pain. Other students may also benefit from your question!

* We understand that traffic, phone calls, work, or family can delay you when you are really trying to get to class. Emerald does not want you to have to miss the best part of your day — your yoga class! If you are late, come into class quietly, find an open spot on the floor, and take a few minutes to get centered and warm up in your own way, then join the class sequence when you feel ready.

* If you will need to leave class early, please let your teacher know before class starts, try to choose a floor spot close to the foyer, and take a short savasana (final resting pose) before you depart quietly.

* If you borrowed a mat from the studio, wipe it down if needed and return it. If there is moisture on
the floor around your mat, either from your perspiration or your water bottle, wipe it up with a paper towel. If you used props, put
them back.

* Please recycle — it is SO yogi! If you have an empty water bottle, toss it in the recycle bin near the kitchen.

* If you arrived late and didn’t have a chance to check in, do so after class.

* Speak with your teacher after class if you have any questions or concerns about your yoga practice.

* Make sure you take your own belongings. Double-check that those are YOUR shoes! (Yes, shoe mix-ups have occurred!) Anything you leave behind will go into the Lost & Found (cardboard box in back by mat storage) for 30 days. After that, items are donated, or if a clothing item fits Jennifer, and it is quite cute, she will not hesitate to add it to her closet!

Congratulations on starting your new yoga practice! We are so happy to have you.
