About Jennifer Safrey

The heart & soul of Emerald Yoga.

E-RYT200Hey, I’m Emerald Yoga Studio owner and senior instructor Jennifer Safrey (E-RYT 200, CYT, etc.). I have practiced yoga for more than 20 years and I can say that yoga truly saved my sanity. In my early twenties, when I was working the night shift at the Boston Herald and existing on caffeine and sugar in a deadline-driven newsroom, I began my yoga journey with ashtanga yoga. After a few years, I branched out my practice to learn vinyasa yoga, and its creativity and go-with-the-flow beauty took me over. I realized that although I loved the people I worked with and the importance of journalism, this frenetic life of moving from crisis to crisis wasn’t serving me, and it wasn’t allowing me to serve others in a way that I found powerful. I no longer wanted to be in the business of  delivering bad news. I wanted to create real-life happy stories.

After leaving the news business, I completed my 240-hour yoga instructor certification at Aura Wellness Center in Attleboro, MA. I am a certified Strala Yoga guide, trained by Strala founders Tara Stiles and Mike Taylor. I have undergone advanced teacher training in master teacher Ashley Turner’s Yoga Psyche Soul yoga psychology program. I have also trained with the Baptiste Power Yoga Institute, 90 Monkeys, and Source Movement Academy. I earned Spirit Junkie Masterclass Level One and Level Two certifications from prominent spiritual teacher Gabrielle Bernstein, and completed life coach certification with Amanda Frances McKinney. I am also a certified Energy Mastery practitioner.

I’m the proud creator and lead trainer of the Emerald Yoga Studio (Yoga Alliance-approved) 200-Hour Teacher Training program, where I guide people down their paths to becoming unique yoga teachers with individual voices who will carry on the yoga tradition to more and more people!

At Emerald Yoga, I aspire to help students find confidence in their bodies, and to see how fun yoga can be! My philosophy is that yoga isn’t about posing and posturing — it is about learning to love moving in your own body. I love to laugh and I try to make you guys laugh in every class, because when you’re laughing, you can’t help but be in the present moment. Great music in class doesn’t hurt, either!

It’s also so very important to me that Emerald Yoga is a positive force in the community. We participate every year as a team in Yoga Reaches Out to raise funds for Children’s Hospital and other worthwhile charities. I have a particular passion for animal rescue, so we also contribute regularly with fundraising classes to benefit various local animal shelters.

I bring life experience, as well as yoga experience, to the studio. I received a B.S. in journalism at Boston University and worked as a news copy editor/copy desk chief for the Boston Herald for nearly a decade. I am also a multi-published, award-winning novelist and a freelance editor, and a member of American Mensa. I hold a black belt in taekwondo. I have studied jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, muay thai, and archery. I was an equestrian in my twenties. I will read anything I can get my hands on, and I love puzzles, board games, cats, crystals, and cute clothes.
